Marg Turik, a long-serving nurse specialist in the Chronic Kidney Disease Program at BC Children's Hospital (BCCH), is the 2020 recipient of the C&W Nursing Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice.

Dr. Janis Dionne, who nominated Marg, noted in her submission, "She has knowledge, expertise and skills that no one else in the province has. Nephrology is not an easy discipline and renal failure even more challenging but there is no one who knows it better than she does."

Janis also noted, "Marg Turik is so deserving as she has dedicated her nursing career to providing exceptional care to children with renal failure in BC since 1989!"

During the more than three decades Marg worked at BCCH, she helped close to 200 children and their families understand, manage and transcend serious kidney health issues.

Teamwork and communication shine through

Teamwork is essential in health care, with interdisciplinary teams working together to ensure necessary, sometimes lifesaving, outcomes. Janis' nomination noted, "Marg not only helps to educate the other team members with her expertise and wisdom but also works to support them so that they are successful in their roles as well. She never minds helping out a team colleague who needs an extra hand as she knows the team must function to support the patient."

Part of Marg's professional success and peer admiration comes down to her talent with communication: "So much of Marg's role in chronic disease care involves effective communication. She can find the hidden meanings behind what parents say so she can address the topics they are afraid to ask about."

When she received the BCCH accolade Marg graciously said, "I am extremely honoured and humbled to be receiving the award for Excellence in Clinical Practice. I am very grateful for the recognition of the work that I do every day. Receiving the award validates that what I am doing does make a difference in the lives of the children and families we care for."

What a way to top off her professional service as Marg recently announced plans to retire after a full and impactful nursing career of 42 years.

BC Renal salutes Marg's dedicated contributions to the many patients and care teams she has worked with, and we add our name to the chorus of congratulations for this prestigious and well-deserved award!
