BC Renal has developed a new wallet card for kidney patients (both dialysis and non-dialysis) to present to lab staff before having their blood drawn: "Please do not ask me to pump my fist."
Repeated fist pumping or keeping a tightly closed fist for a long time during a blood test can raise your potassium level for a short time. This can lead to test results that are not correct. It may cause worry about your kidneys or heart when there is no real problem.
Try to avoid fist pumping or prolonged clenching when having your blood taken. This helps the results be more accurate and reduces the need for repeat tests or treatments that are not needed.
- Print the PDF file below.
- Keep it in your wallet (you may want to put it in a plastic case or have it laminated).
- Show the card to the lab staff who will be drawing your blood.
- Keep your hand relaxed during your blood draw if possible.
