Patient and Family Engagement

Patient and family engagement is key to achieving a kidney health system that is responsive to the needs of patients and families.
We want to:
  • Put patients and families at the centre of the kidney health system
  • Include their voices to identify new opportunities for improvement
  • Support partnerships between patients, families and health professionals
  • Focus effort on what matters most to the patients and families

BC Renal Patient & Family Engagement Framework

In 2019, a working group of patient partners and health professionals developed a provincial patient and family engagement framework. This framework includes guiding principles and a 7-step approach for patient and family engagement in kidney care and research within BC Renal:

It is crucial to consider the context when engaging patients and families from specific populations. For example, when engaging with Indigenous peoples (First Nations, Métis, Inuit), actively reaching out to building relationships with Indigenous leaders, communities and individuals will be key. This will promote trust and collaboration. It is important to seek guidance from and work with partners, such as PHSA Indigenous Health and First Nations Health Authority, who can provide valuable insights, connections and information.
